There are moments in our work that remind us why human connection matters more than any program or service we could ever offer. Thread Playback has been one of those moments. I have watched our staff, volunteers, community members, and people carrying unimaginable stories see themselves reflected back with such tenderness, dignity, and truth that healing begins to happen right in the room. It is difficult to explain until you experience it. Thread Playback doesn't simply tell stories; it honors them. It reminds us that every life deserves to be witnessed, every voice deserves to be heard, and that we are transformed when we courageously hold one another's humanity. The performances have become some of the most meaningful experiences our Streets of Paradise community has shared together, leaving us with greater compassion, deeper understanding, and a renewed sense that none of us are meant to carry our stories alone.

Over the course of an event, the walls come down.
Every gathering carries different perspectives, quiet frictions, and things people rarely say out loud. When one real lived experience is offered and played back with absolute dignity, something in the air shifts.
Attention softens. Defenses rest. People who arrived as separate perspectives begin to witness each other as human beings - and the differences that stayed become a shared, felt experience rather than a distance to defend.

The people are the story.
Playback Theatre is a live performance form founded in 1975 and practiced by companies around the world. The performance is what holds their stories up to the light - what happens when strangers, colleagues, friends, or community members become visible to each other through what they carry.
Human beings have been doing a version of this for forty thousand years - around fires, in villages, long before scripts or stages. Playback carries that ancient practice forward.

Come to a public performance first - a chance to experience the form before bringing it to your own gathering.
We shape every show around who is going to be in the room.
Forty-five to ninety minutes. Led by a conductor who welcomes the room and invites the stories. Held by a team of actors who play each story back on the spot. Colored throughout by a musician whose sound carries the whole arc.
We perform in person, and online when the setup allows.

What unfolds isn't simply theater - it's an experience of being witnessed. Audience members offer pieces of their lives, and within moments those stories are thoughtfully and artfully brought to life by actors and musicians with remarkable sensitivity and respect. The result is something difficult to describe until you've experienced it. People see themselves reflected with dignity. They recognize parts of their own journey in the stories of others. Conversations continue long after the performance because the images and emotions stay with you. In recovery work, we often talk about belonging, empathy, and hope. Thread Playback doesn't just talk about those things, it creates them in real time. It is one of my favorite things happening in our community, and I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to experience it.
